The newborn kittens are 6 days old. Their eyes are still shut and they’ve almost doubled in size from the time they were born. Mama takes pride in them and she’s gotten the hang of cleaning after them as well, quite a relief for the caregiver.
Cute Kitten Names, continued:
Earl, Suzy Q, Sno Ball, Hoho, Ding Dong, Puddles, Duddles, Raindrop, Vevuzela, Pele, Beckham, Max, Lucy, Amigo, Snookums, Patches or Cali for a calico kitten, Rivers, Lakie, Speckles, Fawn, Holly, Dink, Rudy, Frankie, Brax, Bobo Jr., Little Jo, Peanut, Miss Kitty, Benny, Fifa, Mona, Albert, and Lorenza.
I would like to address a common question now. Is a calico kitten always a female?
The answer is that indeed, the majority of calicos are female. A calico kitten or cat is a term that describes the color pattern, it is not a breed. A calico cat is also called: tortoise shell cat also written as tortoiseshell cat, and tortie cat. A calico cat has patches of orange, cream and chocolate brown. There are muted calicos too, which as the word implies are calicos in muted shades.
The explanation why it is hard to find a male calico cat: The orange or ginger color is caused by the O gene, the gene responsible for changing black into a red pigment. This O gene is carried on by the X chromosome. A normal male cat has XY genetic makeup. He has therefore the potential to carry a single O gene (on his one X gene) which would make him reddish. On the other hand, the genetic makeup of the female cat is XX which carries the potential of not just one but two O genes. One O gene creates the red/orange/ginger color, whereas two equal: a calico kitten.

The Crazy Cat Lady
They are such cuties! And that is great info on the calicos! It is also the reason why 75% of the ginger (red) cats are male (I looked it up before because everyone kept assumign that a ginger cat had to be male, but both me and my friend had ginger girls, and one had a litter of ginger girls, so we were so confused.) Apparently if you take the number of ginger, calico and tortie girls it should be equal to the number of ginger boys (including the few rare male calicos with the male gingers). They are all such cuties!
